About

Walking football has grown from the ground up. In country after country it was built by volunteers and national associations, long before anyone else took notice. That is the sport’s strength.

The Global Walking Football Alliance exists to connect those nations and give them world competition that is run properly, fairly and in the open. We believe walking football is football, and that its international game belongs within the established structures of football, not apart from them.

What we do

Organise world competition.

We run international tournaments between nations, open to every member on equal terms.

Connect national programmes.

We link the people and associations building walking football in their own countries, so they can learn from one another and play one another.

Work alongside football’s authorities.

We seek to act on behalf of the bodies responsible for football, never in place of them. Our aim is competition that FIFA, the confederations and national associations can confidently endorse, join, or ask us to deliver for them.

What we will never do

We do not register players, affiliate clubs or approve competitions inside your country. We will never ask you to stay away from anyone else’s events, and we will never penalise you for taking part in them.

Built on a published standard

Every event we run will have written rules published before entry opens, entry criteria and fees applied equally to everyone, qualified match officials, safeguarding, insurance and medical cover, a clear complaints route, and accounts shared with members. If those things aren’t in place, the event doesn’t run.

Our Laws of the Game build on the updated Walking Football Association and FA laws used across the UK, which most walking football nations already play to. We are developing them with our members for international competition.

How the alliances fit together

GWFA is one of several walking football alliances. All of them adopt the same founding charter, word for word.

The alliances are separate and equal. None is above another. Which one decides something depends on the competition: world tournaments are decided by GWFA’s members, European tournaments by the members of the European Walking Football Alliance, and so on as regional alliances form. When a new regional alliance is formed, GWFA confirms that it has adopted the charter. GWFA then guides the alliances so that all of them keep working towards the same goal, as one family. Our role is to support and connect them, so that every region can thrive.

The European Walking Football Alliance is the first regional alliance, and it won’t be the last. Walking football is growing in every part of the world, and each region should be able to run its own competition, decided by its own members.

One seat and one vote, equal to everyone else’s, with a real say in the competitions that affect you. No weighted votes, and no special treatment for large countries or early joiners.

Nations just getting started.

You don’t need to be big or established to have a voice. If walking football is taking root in your country, we want to hear from you.

If your national FA steps in.

If your country’s football association takes on walking football, it inherits the seat. The organisation that built the game keeps a permanent role, with a place at the table and a voice on anything affecting your country. We will help you build that relationship, and nobody is penalised if their association simply isn’t interested yet.
